Mehndi Powder (Natural Henna): Benefits for Hair & How to Use It
Share
Mehndi — or natural henna — is one of the oldest and most beloved hair care traditions in South Asia and the Middle East. Far more than just a natural hair dye, pure Mehndi Powder (Lawsonia inermis) is a complete hair treatment that conditions, strengthens, and protects hair while imparting a rich, natural colour. At IK Organics, our 100% Natural Henna Mehndi Powder is pure, unadulterated, and free from PPD, chemicals, or metallic salts.
What Is Mehndi (Henna)?
Henna is derived from the dried and powdered leaves of the Lawsonia inermis plant, a flowering shrub native to North Africa, South Asia, and the Middle East. Its primary colouring compound, lawsone, binds to the keratin protein in hair, skin, and nails — creating a long-lasting, natural colour without penetrating or damaging the hair shaft.
Key Active Compounds
- Lawsone (2-hydroxy-1,4-naphthoquinone): The primary dye molecule that binds to keratin — provides colour and antimicrobial protection
- Tannins: Astringent compounds that strengthen the hair shaft and tighten the cuticle
- Gallic acid: Antioxidant that protects hair from oxidative damage and environmental stress
- Polyphenols & Flavonoids: Anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties that benefit scalp health
- Protein-binding compounds: Coat and reinforce the hair shaft, adding thickness and strength
Top Benefits of Mehndi Powder for Hair
1. Natural Hair Colouring
Pure henna imparts a rich auburn-to-red tone on light hair and adds warm reddish highlights to dark hair. Unlike chemical dyes, it does not penetrate the cortex — it coats the hair shaft — meaning it cannot lighten hair but adds beautiful depth and warmth without damage.
2. Conditions and Strengthens Hair
Henna’s tannins bind to the keratin in the hair shaft, filling in gaps and micro-cracks in the cuticle. This makes each strand thicker, stronger, and more resistant to breakage — a natural protein treatment effect without synthetic chemicals.
3. Promotes Hair Growth
Henna improves scalp health by balancing pH, controlling excess oil, and reducing scalp inflammation — all of which create a healthier environment for hair growth. Its antifungal properties also help control dandruff-causing organisms that can impede growth.
4. Reduces Dandruff and Scalp Infections
Lawsone and gallic acid in henna have potent antifungal and antibacterial properties that effectively control Malassezia (the primary cause of dandruff) and other scalp pathogens, reducing flakiness and itchiness naturally.
5. Adds Volume and Thickness
By coating each hair strand with a thin layer of tannin-keratin complex, henna visibly increases hair diameter — making fine, limp hair appear fuller and more voluminous after each application.
6. Reduces Hair Fall
Henna strengthens the hair shaft and the follicle opening, reducing mechanical breakage and shedding. Regular use significantly reduces hair fall caused by weak, brittle strands.
7. Balances Scalp pH
Henna is naturally slightly acidic, which helps restore the scalp’s optimal pH balance — particularly beneficial after using alkaline shampoos or chemical treatments that disrupt the acid mantle.
How to Use Mehndi Powder
Classic Henna Hair Treatment (Conditioning + Colour)
- Mix 100–200g of Mehndi Powder (depending on hair length) with warm water to form a thick, smooth paste. The consistency should be like thick yoghurt.
- Add 2 tablespoons of yoghurt and 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for extra conditioning.
- Cover and let the paste rest for 6–12 hours at room temperature to allow dye release (the paste will darken as lawsone releases).
- Apply to clean, damp hair section by section, ensuring full coverage from root to tip.
- Cover with a shower cap and leave on for 2–4 hours (longer for deeper colour).
- Rinse thoroughly with water — no shampoo for 24–48 hours after application to allow the colour to fully oxidise and deepen.
Henna + Amla Treatment (Colour + Strengthening)
- Mix Mehndi Powder with Amla Powder (2:1 ratio) and warm water.
- Add yoghurt and a few drops of lemon juice.
- Rest for 4–6 hours, then apply as above.
- Amla deepens the colour and adds extra strengthening and anti-greying benefits.
Henna + Indigo (For Dark Brown / Black Tones)
- Apply pure henna first and leave for 2–3 hours, then rinse.
- Immediately apply a fresh Indigo Powder paste over the henna-treated hair.
- Leave for 1–2 hours, then rinse.
- This two-step process produces rich brown to near-black tones naturally.
Tips for Best Results
- Always use pure, body-art quality henna with no added chemicals, PPD, or metallic salts — these additives can cause severe allergic reactions.
- Perform a strand test before full application to preview the colour result on your hair type.
- Henna colour deepens over 48–72 hours after application as lawsone continues to oxidise.
- Condition well after henna — use a deep oil treatment 48 hours post-application to restore moisture.
- Results vary by natural hair colour: lighter hair shows more vivid red/auburn; darker hair shows warm highlights.
Precautions
- Always perform a patch test 24–48 hours before full application.
- Never use ‘black henna’ — it contains PPD (para-phenylenediamine), a chemical that can cause severe allergic reactions and permanent skin damage.
- Henna is not compatible with chemical hair dyes — wait at least 6 weeks after chemical colouring before applying henna.
- Avoid if you have G6PD deficiency — lawsone can trigger haemolytic anaemia in affected individuals.
